This is from the root term “chairõ,” which means to rejoice, or be full of joy (cf. 1 Cor. 7:30; 13:6; 2 Cor. 2:3; 6:10; 7:7,9,16 and the compound with sun in 1 Cor. 12:26 and 13:6). From this develops several spiritual concepts related to “joy” and “gift.”
- chara — joy, rejoicing
- charis — generous gift (cf. 1 Cor. 16:3; 2 Cor. 8:4,6)
- grace (cf. 1 Cor. 1:4; 15:10)
- thanks (cf. 1 Cor. 15:57)
- charizomai
- give generously
- forgive (cf. 2 Cor. 2:7-10; 12:13)
- cancel a debt
- charisma — a free gift (cf. Rom. 5:15,16; 6:23; 2 Cor. 1:11) or divinely conferred adornment (cf. 1 Cor. 12:4,9,28,30,31)
